Organic Makeup Brands: Are They Worth It?

Organic Makeup Brands

If you have skin sensitivities, or simply are an enlightened consumer who wants to avoid synthetic and toxic chemicals in your beauty products, no doubt you’ve been shopping for organic makeup brands.

Trouble is, finding and buying organic makeup isn’t as easy as getting ordinary makeup.

For one thing, it’s hard to find makeup that’s truly organic. Just because “organic” is plastered on a product’s label or package doesn’t always guarantee you’re getting something pure and toxin-free. The product could contain an organic ingredient that’s only 0.05% of the entire formulation yet still make that claim.

You’ll have to closely read the product’s ingredients list to make sure it doesn’t contain known allergens and toxins. Some personal care products, like perfumes, are not required by law to list all their ingredients. You’ll have to call the manufacturer and ask what their ingredients are. Even then, you may not get a complete answer.

And then there’s the issue of cost. Products made from organically grown plant ingredients are more expensive than others. You will pay a premium.

Organic Is Better, But At What Cost?

The question is, is organic makeup worth the extra effort and cost of buying them?

What does “organic” mean, anyway?

Different organizations and countries may have different legal definitions for “organic.” At the very least, it means a particular ingredient, usually plant-based, was grown without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

That’s good. It means the makeup you’re buying won’t be laced with these chemical pesticides and fertilizers, either.

However, don’t confuse “organic” with “natural.” A makeup brand that claims to be organic may still contain other ingredients that are not derived from the natural world but are produced synthetically in a laboratory. This is why it’s important to carefully read ingredients lists.

The use of synthetic chemicals may or may not be an issue for you. Just make sure you’re clear on what you want to buy when you shop for organic makeup.

What Do You Really Want?

Personally I don’t want to see any of the makeup industry’s “Dirty Dozen” (Don’t know what those are? Click here to get the free report.) I also prefer to buy products made from plant-based ingredients rather than synthetic chemicals — knowing full well, of course, that just because something’s “natural” doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Lastly, the products must do what they promise to do, whether it’s evening out my skin tone without causing acne, making my eyelashes longer and fuller, or hydrating and coloring my lips.

If I can find all these qualities in an organic makeup brand, I’m willing to pay a little extra — “little” being the operative word. I wouldn’t drive my family to poverty for cosmetics. But, yes, paying a little bit more than I would if I bought ordinary grocery store brands is fine with me. It’s my health and well-being on the line, after all.

For some people, it’s important that their cosmetics and personal care products be vegan, gluten-free, and manufactured in a cruelty-free way (that is, not tested on animals). All these wants are valid and reasonable. Just be prepared to pay for these “extras.”

How about you? Do you go out of your way to find and buy organic makeup brands? What do you look for in organic makeup? and how do you balance your desire for safer cosmetics with a tight budget?
