Natural Recipes to Clean Your Carpets
When you get a spill or stain on your carpet, you may have concerns about spraying chemical-based foams onto it to clean it. If you’d like to clean your carpets using natural ingredients, here are some recipes.
1. Baking soda and vinegar
There are few things that baking soda and white vinegar won’t clean. Carpets are yet another thing that can be cleaned by this bubbly combination. Sprinkle soda over the stain, and then pour white vinegar on the soda. When the fizzing dies down, use an absorbent cloth to rub the carpet and soak up the vinegar. Let the area dry, and then vacuum up the leftover baking soda.
For larger areas, you can use baking soda alone. Simply sprinkle it over your carpet, leave for at least 30 minutes, then vacuum.
2. Salt
Mixing salt with vinegar works well as a spot cleaner on your carpet, too. Mix these substances to make a paste, work it into the spot, let it soak, then rub the area with a cloth dipped in water or club soda. Let the area dry, then vacuum.
3. Steam
Pure water is an excellent carpet cleaner. You can purchase a home steam cleaner, or borrow or rent one. The manufacturer might recommend chemical cleaners to put into the steam cleaner. You can simply use water or white vinegar and water.
4. Hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a wonderful cleaner for protein-based stains, especially blood stains. Simply pour it on and watch the stain disappear. Then blot or rub the area with some vinegar or water.
5. Mop
Yes, you can use a mop to clean your carpets. Mix 2 cups of baking soda with 1/4 cup of borax (you can find this in your store’s laundry detergent aisle) or soap flakes. To these dry ingredients, add 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil(s). Lavender and lemon are popular. Shaking is the best way to combine the oils with the borax and baking soda.
Sprinkle this mixture over your carpet. Then, mix 1 quart of warm water with 1 cup of white vinegar. Dip a sponge mop into the vinegar and water, then gently scrub the carpet you sprinkled with the borax and soda earlier. Allow your carpet to dry thoroughly (at least an hour), then vacuum.
6. Cornmeal
Believe it or not, cornmeal can help clean your carpet. Mix 1 cup of cornmeal with 1 cup of borax and 1/2 cup of baking soda. Sprinkle this over your carpet, and then rub it with a damp cloth or sponge mop. Let it dry, preferably overnight, then vacuum thoroughly.
